Argentina, Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland
Not many can imagine the agony of a World Cup final defeat, and while four years since that heartbreak has passed, the feeling will still be very fresh in the minds of Argentina’s players and fans. And no player will be more inspired to right that wrong than Lionel Messi. Considered by many to be the best player on the planet and of all-time, the Barcelona boy could conceivably be looking at his last shot at winning the coveted trophy. Hopefully, they’ve improved since the South American qualifying stages, because La Albiceleste limped over the finish line on the last possible day. What may add to their woes is that it is no secret to anyone that the country struggles to defend. They also have possibly the worst goalie of the top five countries competing in the tournament. They will, therefore, need to rely on their quality firepower up top. If they’re not careful, they may not make it out of the group – no joke. Standing in their way is Croatia – quite possibly the tournament’s dark-horse. The Eastern European side is brimming with champions at club level who always compete. Nigeria is no slouch either. Six of its footballers ply their trade in the Premier League. Finally, while Iceland (and their fans) captured hearts during the Euro’s two years ago, the island nation will be happy knowing they’ve made history by qualifying for the World Cup. Goal differential could play a massive role in this group and while this prediction may turn some heads, I think Argentina’s defensive woes will be their undoing. Croatia 1st and Nigeria 2nd.
